RUSTECO Full Circle (RFC) GEL This is the latest product development from RUSTECO LLC, now offering clients the possibility to remove soft coatings and existing rust simultaneously. This is a major technological breakthrough, reducing cleaning costs and washing time substantially. The idea to provide a combination product stems from years of experience cleaning ballast tanks from soft coatings. Most of the time there are layers of soft coatings and layers of rust, that usually require two separate cleaning cycles, increasing the turn around time quite a bit. The RFC Combo package enables the shipyard or contractor to perform the rust and soft coating removal simultaneously. Rather than having to schedule two separate crews and equipment, now this can be done in a single step operation. Pricing is still very competitive and of course much cheaper than the overall cost for blasting. The environmental criteria are identical to our regular GreaseMaster and RUSTECO products, i.e., fully biodegradable, no hazards to the marine life and no effect on humans. Safe, Efficient and Cost Effective, that's our motto for all of the RUSTECO product line. The RFC is applied with an airless sprayet, 17K tip, and provides a coverage of 1.5 sq.m. per litre, or 60 sq.ft. per gallon. After a 72 hour curing period the surface is washed with a 30K-psi cold water pressure washer, that will provide a standard equivalent to a WJ2/WJ3 surface, ready for epoxy coating.

Follow Up on Metal Salvage with RUSTECO

In an earlier update we were informed by Benton Graphics of New Jersey that they had obtained approval from the Health Authority to dispose of the used RUSTECO liquid into the public sewer system. The company also advised us of the metal that could be salvaged by dipping those parts in the RUSTECO liquid. With a 5-gal pail 300 lbs of metal were reconditioned. At a retail value of over $ 10,000 this is pretty impressive for a $ 250 investment. Here is an e-mail quote from the Technical Manager Anthony Tomaro 'This product definitely works for us'.

UNDERGROUND NATURAL GAS PIPE REHABILITATION

One of a more than usual challenging tasks was handled by RUSTECO in Germany in the city of Duesseldorf. These Natural Gas pipes have been in place for over 20 years and the corrosion has become so extensive that a remedy had to be found. The normal way of doing this is to physically remove the pipes and repair or replace them. A Dutch company, TechCoat Systems, had developed a special coating for this purpose, which dried instantaneously provided the surface was spotless clean from rust and any oil/grease contamination. The problem they encountered was the fact that cleaning with UHP waterblasting (2000-bar pressure) damaged the now fragile and porous pipes. Working with reduced pressure did not remove the rust and resulted in the inability to apply the coating. At this stage it became apparent that RUSTECO may be the solution to this problem. Since it does not etch the metal nor contaminate the ground or environment, yet provide a surface that can be directly coated, we went ahead with this trial. A section of the pipe was filled with the liquid and let set for 12 hours. The solution was then pumped back into a container (for reuse on the next pipe section) and the pipe was pressure washed with 500-bar water pressure. The result was outstanding, as can be seen from these pictures. A near white surface, SA 2.5 standard, was achieved and the metal was not further degraded. This could be the way of the future how to rehabilitate such pipes much more economical and faster. Currently the paint spraying system is still being fine tuned and further trials will be held this summer. In view of the vast amount of underground pipes worldwide that need repair work to avoid gas leaks, the RUSTECO technology combined with the special coating process could be of major interest and benefit to cities and utility companies in their maintenance programs.

RUSTECO GEL to the rescue at Detyens Shipyard

Recently we were contacted by the Superintendent at the yard explaining a situation that they could not handle with regular cleaning products; The problem was sump corrosion and here is a summary how RUSTECO provided the right solution:

Sumps for the pumps that distribute oil to various locations such as Reduction Gears develop rust in the overhead from the moisture present while the system sits idle. This rust forms stalactite that falls into the oil to be pumped through the system with damaging effects.

Sumps are extremely difficult to clean, in fact it is hard to obtain a surface to which an epoxy or other coating will adhere to. They usually lose adhesion or flake off and and have to be pumped through the system, creating potentially the same damage as is the case with rust.

The RUSTECO GEL was applied in two coats by brush to a surface initially cleaned with rags. The GEL forms a hard film after drying that resists flaking and is not detrimentally affected by the oils. This application has proven to be the best and most effective treatment for this condition. A 2.5 gal pail of the GEL was all it took to solve this problem and prevent serious damage to the pump.

WONDERFUL PRODUCT

Here is an excerpt of an e-mail from one of many happy RUSTECO customers:

I have been a motorcycle enthusiast for over 30 years and I restore and refurbish vintage motorcycles in my spare time. Try as I might, in all those years, I had yet to find a rust removing product that worked..... until yours!! This stuff is magic!! I just started using it on a few bits so far and already it has saved me hundreds of dollars in parts replacement. The tail light assembly, shifter and brake pedal on a 1975 Suzuki T500M were badly rusted. I followed the instructions and then removed all the rust with some steel wool. After a small coat of metal polish the 25-year old parts looked like new. Wonderful!! I also like that it is super safe to use - a very big plus too!

Again, a great product. Richard Bond Mill Valley, CA

RUSTECO MILESTONE REACHED IN TANK CLEANING

Just at the beginning of 2002, in fact on January 15, a unique milestone was reached at the RUSTECO Service Center in Long Beach. Motorcycle Tank # 6000 , that is six thousand, was treated with the RUSTECO liquid to remove rust from the interior without damaging the outside paint. It came out as nice as all the other 5999 with a clean metal surface. "READY TO ROLL" is our slogan for the RUSTECO treated tanks, you just put gas in there and you are ready for many rust-free riding years. The tank in question was a yellow Harley-Davidson and the owner will be sending us some more details on the history of this tank. We'll be reporting this when we get the info. When checking our records we found that the oldest tank we ever cleaned at the RUSTECO Service Center was done way back in 1993 at the Canoga Park facility. There was a set of two Harley-Davidson tanks, built in 1897. The metal was 'wafer-thin' and the restorer was really concerned about possible metal loss from the cleaning process. Since RUSTECO does not attack the metal, it only removes existing rust, there was no problem and the customer got a great deal. With a $ 200 cleaning job he probably gained thousands of dollars in value. In fact those tanks were irreplacable, so the real value to the restorer was far beyond that.

GREASEMASTER gets thumbs up for ALYESKA BWTF discharge.

M.S.E. Inc, an Independent EPA Contract Program Lab, performed an analysis for halogenated volatile and semi-volatile organic priority pollutants on the GREASEMASTER as required by the ALYESKA CLEANING AGENT CRITERIA for Cargo Tank, Bunker Tank and Bilge Cleaning. The lab report confirms that the analytical methods used were in accordance with the criteria. The results, within the detection limits, found no halogenated organic constituents in the GREASEMASTER degreaser. It is, therefore, acceptable as a cleaning agent that can be discharged at ALYESKA's Ballast Water Treatment Facility in Alaska.

MEAT CUTTING BOARDS - another GREASEMASTER First

The GreaseMaster has of course long ago been approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as an A1-cleaner in all meat plants, food processing and food handling places. BUNGE MEAT Industries in Australia used the GreaseMaster to remove live micro-organisms from cutting boards (bacteria, moulds and yeasts) and compared it directly to the commonly used alkaline detergent TURBOCHLOR. Swabs and dip slides were taken for both products. The GREASEMASTER performed well, in fact the swab on the cutting boards showed no general growth, whereas the board treated with the alkaline detergent had a growth count of 240, both on the third and fourth samples taken. The results were very encouriging and it appears that the GREASEMASTER is superior to chemicals like TURBOCHLOR in the removal of live micro-organisms from some surfaces.

BALLAST TANK CLEANING for INTERNATIONAL TANKER FLEET

During the summer of 2001 the RUSTECO GEL was successfully used to descale ballast tanks on this 65,000 dwt tanker, which then were coated with HEMPEL epoxy. A number of tests were run prior to commencing the actual work and a tank inspection was perfomed when the vessel berthed in Corpus Christi, TX. The tanks were in very poor condition, heavy scale rust was present throughout, all of "Grade D" type. The work was performed at a Black Sea port and initially about 300,000 sq.ft. were treated with the GEL. The customer required an ST2 standard, using water blasting instead of power tooling. In fact an SA2 standard was achieved with the gel and 700-bar pressure washing; the tanks were then coated with HEMPADEX and HEMPADUR. Just to illustrate the efficiency of the RUSTECO GEL, some tanks were power tooled after the gel had been applied, when the pressure washer was not available, and some were power tooled without the gel. The completion time with gel vs. without gel was 70% faster, which was confirmed by the ROSTOK Service Company, who acted in a supervisory capacity for the owners.

DISCHARGE PERMIT of RUSTECO Wastewater to SEWER

The Department of WATER POLLUTION CONTROL in the township of Hamilton, NJ recently issued a Non-Domestic Wastewater Discharge Permit to Benton Graphics. This company evaluated the RUSTECO treatment and found they were saving thousands of dollars on refurbishing tiny rusty parts, that otherwise would have been replaced at a substantially higher cost. Permission was granted by the supervisory Environmental Health Specialist to meter this wastewater into the sewer system.

SUCCESSFUL DRYDOCK RUST REMOVAL + COATING

Todd Pacific Shipyard in Seattle, Washington was faced with rehabilitating the Double Bottom Tanks in the Drydock. Grit blasting was not acceptable due to environmental restrictions. The tanks had been coated with coal-tar epoxy and a partial failure had to be addressed. UHP blasting would have been much too slow and damaged the remaining intact coal-tar epoxy. The RUSTECO GEL was the answer to this problem. The GEL has no environmental restrictions and with the water pressure cleaning at 700-bar (9800-psi)the existing coating could stay in place. Initially three tanks with a total surface area of 60,000 sq.ft., rust Grade "C" and "D" were sprayed with the GEL. The application was made in three layers for a total thickness of 25 mils (625 microns)and completed at a rate of 1500 sq.ft./hour. After a curing time of 72 hours the tanks were pressure washed with a 700-bar cold water pressure washer, running two guns off the same machine at an actual pressure of about 600-bars. The surface was then coated with International Paint Epoxy # 808. After a ten day ballast water test, which is sufficient to evaluate the quality of the surface prep, no blistering or any deformities in the paint were noted. The Technical Superintendent approved the job; the RUSTECO GEL had performed well and in fact exceeded the expectations of the shipyard. By not having to remove the existing coal-tar epoxy a lot of man hours were saved and the whole process was completed at a fraction of the time that sand or UHP blasting would have required. The GEL coverage was about 80 sq.ft (8 sq.m.) per gallon and resulted in a product price of $ 0.59/sq.ft. ($ 6.30 sq.m.)and a completion time 80% faster than the common water or grit blasting.

H.K.FLEET MANAGEMENT COMPANY SATISFIED

Dilip Nair, Superintendent of Fleet Management in Hong Kong, recently expressed his complete satisfaction with the RUSTECO corrosion treatment to our TechServices Manager Thomas. Several vessels under their management had the RUSTECO GEL product delivered for regular maintenance tasks. Bulkers like the 'M/V SPAR GARNETT' and 'M/V WAGEN LIGHT' had about 25,000 sq.ft. of metal treated against rust with RUSTECO. Another vessel, the 'M/V SNOWMASS', managed by a Singaporean company, removed about 20,000 sq.ft. of rust. For extended use life of metal there is no better way than RUSTECO to maintain parts and equipment.

UNIQUE SOFT COATING REMOVAL TECHNOLOGY

The GreaseMaster has again shown its uniqueness in being able to remove soft coatings from ballast tanks, which then were directly coated with Royal Coat, represented by Alpha Omega Coatings Pte. Ltd. In October of 2001 the 'FRONTIER ICE' had about 140,000 sq.ft. of soft coating cleaned with the GreaseMaster and coated. Not only were the owners impressed, but the coating company's representative gave a three year warranty for this project. This is unheard of in the marine industry, as everybody knows that the common way of removing soft coatings will not leave a grease-free surface and coating failures are very frequent. A second drilling rig vessel for FRONTIER DRILLING was then done in December of 2001. The 'FRONTIER DISCOVERER' had about 150,000 sq.ft. treated, again removing soft coating GEL B, with the same outstanding results. Then followed the TRANSOCEAN rig 'ROGER MOWELL', where two smaller tanks, 750 sq.m. each, were treated on a trial basis. John Samuel was the contractor in Singapore. TRANSOCEAN was very satisfied with the GreaseMaster surface prep and the Royal Coat paint application. Currently work is commencing on the next TRANSOCEAN rig, the 'HARVEY WARD', with approximately 300,000 sq.ft. ballast tanks to be treated. This is another example how our product line can help owners and coating companies alike to solve the problem of ballast tank rehabilitation in an efficient and highly cost effective manner. Product cost was only about 24 cents/sq.ft. and the actual removal process was performed with one of TMT's HYDROTEK 3200-psi (250-bar) hot water washers at a rate of 2000 sq.ft. per hour. The project was completed well in time to the shipyards's and owner's satisfaction. TMT has the HYDROTEK machines as standard on these kind of jobs in many parts of the world. A new generation diesel-diesel has now been developed. It is safe to use on tankers and performs well in those applications.

A superior alternative to 'steel shot blasting' for metal prepping prior to porcelain coating.

RUSTECO has again provided an economic, safe and highly effective solution to one of North America's leading hot water heater manufacturers. The internal steel parts are being 'steel shot' to remove the mill coating and any other contaminants that are present on this low carbon steel surface. This steel shot blasting process provides a satisfactory substrate for the porcelain coating, however the cost and disposal of the media is undesirable, in fact it is a major expense in metal preparation. With the RUSTECO treatment a perfectly clean surface was obtained with a superior adhesion for the porcelain coating. Surface preparation is of course the key to any coating process and there is no question that the RUSTECO line of products gives manufacturers the opportunity to reduce their unit costs, provide workers with a safer work place and last, but not least, makes compliance with environmental regulations a breeze.

OIL REFINERY GAS COMPRESSORS RECONDITIONING - SUBSTANTIAL 7- FIGURE SAVINGS TO NEW OWNERS

The RUSTECO Service Center was recently involved in the cleaning of about 80,000 lbs of machinery from the Golden West Refinery in L.A. County. The equipment was installed in 1950 and after shutdown of the facility in the early '90's, the Dresser-Rand Co Los Angeles Service Center was commissioned to inspect, repair and/or rebuild these two large gasoline making compressors. Some of the cylinders weighed 11,000 lbs a piece and required extensive cleaning from long term use and exposure to the elements. The GreaseMaster and RUSTECO GEL did a great job, restoring this equipment to a mint condition. The customer took advantage of the fact that this non abrasive cleaning process ensured that no further deterioration of the metal would take place. All parts were completely derusted and are now in the process of being re-assembled. The savings over a new purchase was a 7-figure number and RUSTECO played a major part in the ability to restore this equipment.

SIX OIL REMOVAL FROM BATTLESHIP 'USS ALABAMA'

The GreaseMaster was recently involved in a demo cleaning of a fuel oil tank on this great battleship. The residues on the walls looked like a heavy paste, and in the bottom there was a 4-5 ft. thick layer of 'black oil', that also could not be pumped out. Due to the fragile condition of the steel it was not safe to send personnel down below the water line. The GreaseMaster was successfully used in this application, mixed into 30,000 gallons of water and steam heated. The GreaseMaster managed to liquefy the sludge in the bottom to such an extent that it could be pumped out. No manual labor was involved in that process and the tank was clean below the water line.

UNIQUE RUST REMOVAL FROM BALLAST TANKS AT SEA - NO SANDBLASTING OR HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

A unique cleaning process on an oil tanker at sea with the RUSTECO GEL was recently used to remove heavy rust from ballast tanks on the M/T 'Torm Kirsten'. The process only required a small pressure washer (3800 psi/320 bar) and an airless spray gun to apply the Gel. After 72 hours curing time the GEL was removed and SIGMA's 'Ballamastic' coating was applied. There were no special safety precautions necessary, contrary to sandblasting, and the adhesion to the surface was excellent. The actual work was performed and directed by the cleaning contractor, Muhlhan A/S, under our supervision, while at sea. This eliminates lengthy and expensive port stays. Without any disposal restrictions, this is the way of the future cleaning ballast tanks. Pictures from this operation can be seen on our website under RUSTECO Marine Applications.

RUSTECO TO THE RESCUE AT ATOMIC REACTOR - HUGE STEEL PLATES PRESERVED AGAINST CORROSION

The Canadian market has shown a great interest in RUSTECO and GREASEMASTER. Recently RUSTECO was involved in a major corrosion treatment project for CANATOM, shipping huge steel plates to the Far East. The problem of corrosion build up prior and during transportation was a major concern. The RUSTECO GEL was used for the pre-existing rust removal as well as the protection during the voyage. CANATOM approved the batch for shipment after verifying that no new rust build up had taken place.
